Learn the ancient craft of masonry with the talented Will Davies, Stone Mason and Carver at Winchester Cathedral on a unique 2-day Stonemasonry course on the 24-25th (Thursday & Friday) of June and 24-25th (Saturday & Sunday) of July 2021.
There are 10 spaces available per course.
Why take a course in stonemasonry?
The course is run by Winchester Cathedral's highly skilled Stonemasons in an idyllic setting within the Cathedral grounds. It is the perfect introduction to masonry as a possible career or just for leisure. All skill levels are welcome, whether you’ve never touched a mallet and chisel before, or if you’re looking for more advanced tuition.
What will you learn?
During the course you will learn the basic skills of stone carving and the ability to use them after the course in your own time. You will also be able to leave on the final day with your piece of crafted stone.
Stonemason Course Structure:
On day 1 you will be introduced to the tools of a typical Stonemason and how to use them in a safe and appropriate way. You will then learn about basic skills required to complete the carving, including setting out and drawing the design on the stone and start carving your chosen design.
Following a break for lunch, in the afternoon you will have the opportunity to continue carving your design, with one-to-one tuition from the Stonemasons themselves.
Day 2 will include a full day of carving, with the opportunity for a short tour of the Cathedral in the afternoon.
What will the Stonemasonry course provide?
The teachers of the course will provide the stone and tools to use during the course, including goggles, gloves, masks, and demonstration pieces to copy from for inspiration.
The only thing you will need to provide is your own steel toe capped safety boots. (These cost around £15 from hardware stores, if you do not have a pair currently)
£345 per person for the two days.
Classes are limited to 10 people per workshop to ensure the best experience and tutoring time.
