In a world full of fine ensembles, the Castalian Quartet has been noted as ‘the new force to be reckoned with’.  This is reflected in demand from festivals worldwide, and in the numerous awards the ensemble has won.  They bring their special talent to the delightful ambience of St Cross Church in a programme focused on the early decades of the string quartet genre.  Haydn is considered as the creator of the form, influencing the next generation of composers, among them Fanny Mendelssohn, whose only quartet will be played, and Beethoven, who wrote a set of quartets for the Russian ambassador in Vienna, one of which is played this evening.
