Winchester Music Club - Durufle Requiem
Thursday 14th November 7.30pm
Winchester Cathedral Nave
Bernstein Chichester Psalms
Finzi Lo, the full, the sacrifice (sung by Winchester College Chapel Choir)
One of the best loved choral works of the 20th century, Morris Durufle’s beautiful Requiem,
forms the centre piece of this concert with Winchester Music Club and the Winchester College
choirs. Begun during the Second World War but not completed until 1947, it is based on
Gregorian chant, which gives the work a timeless feel. Contrasting with the Requiem are two
other works from the middle of the last century: from England, Gerald Finzi’s extended Anthem
Lo, the full, final sacrifice, and from the USA, Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, composed in
1965 for the Southern Cathedrals Festival.
Tickets £10-£35 plus £1 per ticket booking fee (capped at £5 per transaction)

The Waynflete Singers, under the baton of Andrew Lumsden, the Cathedral’s Director of Music, are delighted to offer Sir Edward Elgar's mighty oratorio The Kingdom, together with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
The work presents a moving portrait in sound of Jesus's disciples and the life of the early church. Peter is made the focus of the action and musical highlights include the Pentecost scene, and Mary's sublime solo 'The sun goeth down'. This is a magnificent work with Elgar’s typically beautiful and expansive orchestration and lyrical choral lines. We hope that you will find this work both thrilling and uplifting.
